When you’re stuck in a traffic jam, you may want to get help.
But is it the right call?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the most common response is to call for a tow truck.
But it’s important to remember that even when a tow vehicle arrives, it may be too late to help.
“We see people who have suffered serious injuries, have lost control of their vehicle, and can’t move it,” the NHTSA said.
So if you’re stranded on a highway and don’t have a tow, it’s best to use the tow vehicle.
“The best thing you can do is call the tow company and ask them to bring the vehicle to you,” the agency said.
The tow truck is not your friendThe best time to call a tow company is at least 45 minutes before the start of your trip.
The NHTAS says if you arrive after the tow is due to leave, you should call the company within three hours of arrival.
“You can then try to negotiate a fee, which is a reasonable amount,” the National Transportation Safety Board said.
“If that’s not possible, then you can use the company’s assistance to help with the repair of the vehicle or its related damage.”
Tow vehicles can be a bit tricky to findSometimes, tow companies will only offer to tow the vehicle if the tow driver is willing to take you to the tow site.
“There are tow companies that will do the tow for you if they feel they can help,” the NTSB said.
But if you are stuck on the highway, the NTCB advises you to stay off the road as much as possible.
“Even if you’ve had a good day, the roads are not as safe,” the group said.
